Jim Barry Wines Achieves SWA Certification

Jim Barry Wines has reached a new milestone in its sustainability journey, achieving Sustainable Winegrowing Australia (SWA) certification in December 2024.

Additionally, the family-owned and operated winery in the Clare Valley, South Australia, retained the Toitū carbonreduce certification for the second year, achieving a 13% reduction in carbon emissions.

Jim Barry Wines has a long-standing commitment to protecting the environment and has incorporated sustainable practices into its vineyard and winery operations over the past 65 years. Achieving certification was important to align its practices with industry standards and address the concerns of consumers worldwide.

The Barry family is dedicated to preserving the environment and producing exceptional wines with a minimal ecological footprint. Third-generation winemaker Tom Barry said that all family and staff members had played an active role in achieving both milestones. “We asked our staff to look at their behaviors, routines, and practices and find areas for improvement. It was important for us to take a holistic approach to the certification process and not just tick boxes.

“As a family-owned business, our thoughts are always on the future and the legacy we are leaving for generations to come. Achieving these certification milestones is gratifying and exciting. It sets a clear path for our business moving forward,” said Tom.

Beyond certification, the Barry family continues to innovate to achieve sustainability outcomes. In 2024, they launched a proprietary lightweight Riesling bottle, setting an industry benchmark for innovative packaging and further enhancing the company’s commitment to sustainability. They will continue seeking new ways to reduce their environmental footprint.
